Dravid Rang Dhawan To Inform Him His T20I Career Was Over & We Love His Transparency

When India’s squad for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa was announced, there were some surprise omissions.

The exclusion of Rahul Tripathi and Sanju Samson, who had performed well for their respective franchises in the IPL 2022, made huge headlines but there was not much debate around veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan, who once again piled up runs in the cash-rich league.

Playing for Punjab Kings, the southpaw from Delhi amassed 460 runs in 14 innings and finished the season as the top-scorer for his new franchise.

Overall, he finished fourth in the Orange Cap race. The only Indian ahead of him on the list was Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain KL Rahul, who has 537 runs to his name.

With senior players rested, KL Rahul has been picked to lead the Indian team against the Proteas but it was a great jolt to Dhawan as he was touted to lead the side.

Now, according to a report published in insidesport, the decision to drop the left-handed batter from the shortest format squad was taken by head coach Rahul Dravid.

During the selection meeting, the former India captain told the selectors to give more chances to the youngsters, at least in the shortest format so that we could build a strong squad for the future.

With youngsters like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson and many others knocking on the Team India door, Dravid felt it would be harsh if their hard work was overlooked.

Dhawan’s T20I career is over and Dravid knew it was a difficult decision for anyone to accept because he did everything to make a case for himself. That’s why, the head coach told the selectors that he would be making a call to Dhawan himself and inform him of the decision before the squad is announced.

“Shikhar has been a great servant of Indian cricket for over a decade. But in T20s, you have to give chances to youngsters who have been doing well. Rahul had to make the tough call and we all agreed. Shikhar was informed by Rahul before the team was announced on Sunday,” a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying in the report.

“The plan has been simple. When you have Ruturaj, Ishan, KL besides Sanju amongst many other top-order batter, it gets difficult. Rahul has a clear idea of what he wants. Of course, we all have respect for Shikhar and that is why he made a call to inform him that, he will not be in T20 plans anymore,” added the official.

Dhawan would think that he still had plenty to offer to the Indian team and he’s totally right about it. But as a coach it was Dravid’s duty to not let emotions get in the way and make some tough calls.

Also, we love the fact that Dravid took it upon himself to ring Dhawan and inform him of the decision taken in the selection meeting. Dravid once again won our hearts with his incredible gesture.
